So What Is Domain Tasting You Ask?

If you are asking what is domain tasting? You are in the right place.

According to WikiPedia, "Domain tasting, also known as domain kiting, is a practice of registrants using the five-day "grace period" at the beginning of a domain registration for ICANN-regulated generic top-level domains to test the marketability of a domain name. During this period, when a registration must be fully refunded by the domain registry, a cost-benefit analysis is conducted by the registrant on the viability of deriving income from advertisements being placed on the domain’s web site."

What domain name tasting basically means, is they register the domain name, and check whether it can earn them more then the $6 per year that a domain name registration costs via PPC. If the tasters can earn more then $6 needed for registration they keep the domain name. You might think, what if it earns $7 or $8 per year, that’s nothing… but you are wrong. a profit of $2 per domain, per year might be nothing, but these guys own 1000s upon 1000s of domains. Say they own 10,000 domains and profit on each domain is $2, that’s a $20,000 paycheck in their pocket every year… for doing literally nothing other than registering a domain name and parking it :) .

If while tasting the domain name they notice that it is not getting any hits or a minimal amount of hits, they simply delete the domain name and let it float out into the ether. At this time, someone else might spot that it is available and register the same domain for some more domain name tasting…. see that it is not good and delete it and so on.

Up until recently, domain tasting was only available to the fat cat registrars and people in the know, but recently registrars have been allowing regular folk to taste domains. Some companies allow domain tasting for a fee, while others let you taste for free.

One of the companies offering domain tasting right now is Moniker.com. You can taste domains and delete them within 5 days of registering them at the cost of $1 per taste.
