Pool.com Backorder service review

Posted on October 7th, 2007 by admin in Domain News | 1 Comment »

Pool.com is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada and is a subsidiary of a Canadian company called Momentous.ca Corp. Momentous.ca own the well know internet companies NameScout.com, Internic.ca, Zip.ca and others.

Pool.com has a large collection of domain name registrars under their wing, all working hard in order to grab that domain name you always wanted. I suppose one of the negatives of Pool.com being associated with so many registrars is that you can end up with your domain name being registered under some obscure registrar somewhere. Of course you can always wait the necessary 60 days and transfer your domain name to a more friendly registrar.

Pool.com was the first backordering service that introduced the concept of auctions for dropped domains. While SnapNames.com and others were charging you fees upfront, regardless of whether you won the domain or not, Pool.com started out from the blocks charging you only if you won the domain name. Also, if more then one person backordered the same name, Pool.com sent the domain name into auction mode where the highest bidder won the domain. Of course, today most of Pool.com‘s competitors including SnapNames.com have followed suite.

Pool.com charges a $60 fee for a successful backorder. If however more then one person placed a backorder on a domain name, the domain name goes into the before mentioned auction which is concluded with the domain name going to the person willing to pay the most money. If you are not successful in winning the name, you are not charged anything. Pool.com charges you via your a pre-approved credit card.

The Pool.com interface is quite simple and easy to use. They could use a redesign, however I suppose visual effects are not the most important thing in this business. They pride themselves at being able to grab the best names and in the end, that’s all that matters.

Another feature Pool.com can lay claim to is their domain name marketplace. They introduced a domain name marketplace together with the auction system to allow their customers to list their domains for sale. The auction works according to traditional ways, lasting a given amount of time, and the winner gets the domain.

Overall, Pool.com is probably the number one domain backordering services out there.

I dont agree that pool.com is the number one domain backordering services. I have had a very bad experience with them. I backordered a domain that I actually owned and had to re-gain it through them. After succesful winning of the bid and charging my credit card, they hand over the domain to some registrar in Israel and they never hand over the control of the domain to me and let me own the domain. It has been more than 2 weeks and I still do not have access to my domain.
