Finding the right domain for your business

I have always preached that there are still many quality domain names to be registered at reg fee. Now, before you start throwing stones, hear me out.

Yes, the dictionary .coms are gone. And yes, most quality overture two keyword .coms are gone. However, does your business really have to have a dictionary word, or a big overture two word domain to be successful? Google, Ebay, Kazaa, Skype, and many others didn’t think so.

Now you will say but all the 4 letter dot coms, and most 5 letter pronounceable dot coms are gone. Well, google is not a 5 letter domain. There are always and will always be brandable domain names that you can buy. There are over 16 million possible five letter combinations. How many possible combinations are of the 6 letter kind? And 7 letters?

In today’s world, branding is the key to buying a successful domain for your business. For further reading, check out this article by business week on finding the right domain for your business.

I don’t give into the concern others have thinking all the good names are gone. Sure a lot of good ones are, but now we just have to be a little more creative with what we choose. I don’t understand why domainers think they’ve found a gold mine by grabbing up the LLLL.com names. I mean, come on — I don’t even think those are going to be marketable. That’s not being creative, that’s just being first.

Hi Mark, I suppose one of the reasons the quality LLLL.coms were snapped up was the success of the LLL.coms. A precedent was set and once people started buying, it was basically like a stampede.

The buying up of the final few LLLL.coms was just market speculation though. I’d expect a lot of the crappy LLLL.coms to come up in next year’s drops. CVCV.coms will only rise in value in the future. I expect the value of those to reach the heights of $xx,xxx as demand grows.

With no disrespect, their are still some good directory domains up for grabs, it surprises me how many, i would like to point out the value of the letter(N) for the use of directory domains – I recently bought pokernrules.com as well as pokerandrules. I think this is a good directory domain. Some may differ – I think you just have to have a good feel for generics.

You are absolutely right gene, there are many names still left out there. You just have to find them.
