Solutions to the growing domain tasting crisis

Posted on November 13th, 2007 by admin in Domain News | 4 Comments »

There has been a lot of complaining in recent times about the practice of domain tasting or kiting. It’s nothing new, registrars have been doing it for years now, but domain tasting has only recently been available to the general public.

Many registrars today allow you to register a domain, see if it has any traffick, and if not – delete it at not much cost. Moniker let’s you do it for $1 a pop.

What has upset many people is that the big fish in the domaining game that have first hand access to all the best name have been given an even bigger advantage. They can basically pick and chose the names they like, safely determining whether the domain can pay for itself in parking revenue, while discarding the leftovers to the masses.

The Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse (CADNA) has posted a white paper on domain tasting/kiting that they hope will generate more informed opinions and help resolve this crisis.

Millions of domain names are tasted or kited daily. The tasting and potential registration of these names can lead to customer confusion, brand and trademark dilution, lost revenue, and at times even fraudulent and criminal activity. The parties that register these names and those who partner with them to monetize the traffic are the only beneficiaries of domain tasting.

Well I for one look forward to seeing how this is going to be resolved. The little guy loses probably, no David beating Goliath here :) .

This really bugs me. I’d like to know just how they got a corner on the market before us little guys got a whiff of it. Grrr!

I know of a couple big time domainers who have their own team of programmers that make their software to catch dropping domains for example.

I’m not a big-time domainer at all, but I have an account at tasting.dotcomgenie.com that I use to taste domains. It’s very cheap. Just a few days ago I read about these websites that give away tips in advance about the sales that stores will having on so called “Black Friday.” So I tasted five related domains and it turns out both BlackFridayTips.com and BlackFridayPreviews.com are getting traffic and clicks. So I kept them. I won’t get rich tasting the occasional domain name, but at least it keeps me from wasting money on useless domains.

Indeed, however big companies taste thousands of domains at a time.

I suppose there is now way to stop one without stopping the other.
