Microsoft promotes short domains
Posted on November 17th, 2007 by admin in Domain News | 6 Comments »
I recently blogged about Google buying g.cn to fight Baidu in the Chinese market. Following on from that, Microsoft is another large corporation to promote short domain names in that region.
They have recently purchased w.cn and 9.cn. The reason they are doing this is so that Chinese speakers, who use Chinese keyboards, do not have to replicate many english characters, only one.
I expect other sites to follow suite and purchase the other available ( if any are left ) short domain names in various tlds in the next few days.

I don’t think that short domains are really relevant and can help in improving their market shares in China…
Seems like they are thinking it can. I think what they are aiming at is making their services easily available to Chinese speakers and people that use Chinese keyboards.
I think it’s a good move, but only in major ccTLDs like .cn, .in or .ru.
I was wondering what must have been the cost of these short domains?
I would think definitelly in the $xx,xxx range if not higher
