Over 15,000 applications received by dotAsia for first sunrise period

The principal registry for .asia domains – dotAsia – have announced they have recieved over 15,334 applications for domains in the first phase of the Sunrise period. The second phase of the Sunrise period commeced on November 13th, 2007 and will draw to a close on January 15, 2008.

“We are extremely pleased with the response. The process has also been smooth and calm. I am most excited to see that brand owners around the world are able to protect their names through our Sunrise process. If you can think of any brand, it has probably been registered.” said Edmon Chung, CEO of DotAsia.

This first domain to be registered was praise.asia, owned by HiChina, an ICANN accredited registrar. There were a total of 622 domains with more then one application, so competition is fierce even at this early stage.

Australia accounted for the highest number of applications from Asia (3,450) with Hong Kong a close second (3,397). The largest number of applications overall came from United States (4,920) as expected. A total of 60 registrars took part in the registrations.

It seems like all the good domains will already be gone when registration opens for the general public next year.
