IP shortage is coming, and only a third of ISPs care

You might have heard about the upcoming shortage of IP addresses. Geoff Huston predicts that the world will run out of IP addresses by the year 2010, however it seems not many people care about this issue.

In order to avoid this problem, the world will eventually move to IPv6 from the current IPv4 protocol.

During the recent IPv6 Summit held in Canberra, Australia, concerns were raised regarding the transition to IPv6. According to Latif Ladid, president of the IPv6 Forum, only a third of the world’s 21 top ISP have began the move to IPv6.

Ladid stated that the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 won’t cost as much as many of the protractors have claimed, noting that US Defence Department contractor Bechtel has only budgeted $100,000 USD per annum for the IPv6 transition.
