The grey line between Cybersquatting and Domaining

Traverse legal recently dissected a post made by the Domain Kid which basically described a domainer as someone who tends to practice cybersquatting.
The original post by the Domain kid is most likely written with the aim of drawing in a bit of comment and link love by being humorous and witty.
That is expected from a fledgling blog that wants to generate some interest and encourage its readers’ participation. It’s all part and parcel of blogging.
However, what the Domain kid has inadvertently done is depicted all domainers as cybersquatters.
You are a domainer if … on your job application you list cybersquatting
…you own some sort of iphone related domain name…
To be honest, this is a blatant misrepresentation. Any true domainer worth his salt knows that they should steer well clear of any trademarked domains and typos of the same. The legal repercussions and damages to a domainer’s reputation brought about by a dispute over cybersquatting far outway any shortterm profit that may be gained from wayward clicks on a typo-ed domain.
The Domain kid goes on to mention Rick Schwartz as a symbol of domaining – I am sure Rick, with his extensive portfolio of generic domain names steers well clear of any cyber-squatted domains. He has no need for them nor would he want the negative publicity brought about by any mention of his name in conjunction with trademarked domains.
The power of domains is undoubtedly nestled firmly in the lap of generic domains, as demonstrated perfectly by Rick’s recent sale of iReport.com for $750,000.
A domainer will strive to compile a portfolio of quality generic domain names. A domainer sees the longterm effects of a generic domain and invests wisely. A cybersquatter on the other hand is left to feed of the scraps of a cybersquatted domain that they will eventually be forced to relinquish.
Interestingly, the Kid ends his list with the perfect statement:
you have a bracelet that says “What would Frank Schilling Do?”
My answer to that is – Well, he would certainly not cybersquat.
