Domains ending in .mp3, .pdf, .jpg, .exe?

At the latest ICANN conference in New Delhi there has been talk over the possibility of domains ending in popular file extensions such as .mp3, .pdf, .jpg, .exe etc. ICANN is testing the waters by asking for feedback from regular folk like you and me at their forum. The changes if approved might take effect even as soon as end of 2008.
The actual policies for 2008′s round are being developed by ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO).
I don’t know about you, but I personally feel that having gTlds end in file names is probably inevitable. In the future we will most likely see the gTld volume increase tremendously as more business moves online. As far as this being a good thing, I am undecided. I am sure hackers and spyware artists are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of domains ending in .exe being available for use by the general public. It would be easy for a general user to confuse a legitimate.exe domain with something like mydomain.me/myspywareprogram.exe or whatever… I am sure hackers and general web pranksters/miscreants will find a way to exploit this.
On the other hand, it would be neat to have a domain like rnb.mp3 or books.pdf – they would certainly be worth a pretty penny.
While discussing these possibilities, GNSO also pointed out that the possibility of having totally numeric gTLDs is out of the question, as this would lead to confusion for the DNS system as far as IP addresses are concerned. Extensions representing Hex values (e.g. anything starting with “0x” ) would also be out of the question.
In any case, another interesting story from ICANN on the horizon I suppose. For the ICANN notes, go here.

Do you have a link to these being proposed as TLDs? I could not find one. What I did find is discussion of a new method of creating TLDs, and that numbers should be excluded and a proposal that file extensions should also be excluded – not proposing them as TLDs.
This is a terrible idea IMO. What was the question that brought this up? How can we make the internet more confusing and easier to create havoc?
Banning file extensions as TLDs makes a LOT more sense. I find that much easier to imagine.
