What will be the Kosovo ccTld?
Posted on February 18th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 23 Comments »
With Kosovo MPs declaring independence yesterday – providing international powers confirm their independence by recognizing their statehood – we can expect them to apply for their own ccTld in the not so distant future.
We saw an interesting ccTld assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to Kosovo neighbours Montenegro recently – .me – which caused widespread discussion about the potential value of such an interesting tld.
What are the possibilities for a Kosovo ccTld? On July 9th, 2007, while talk of Kosovo independence was still debated, John Yunker suggested it might be .ks.
Looking at the IANA root zone whois information list, we can see that the following ccTlds starting with the letter k are already taken:
.ke – Kenya
.kg – Kyrgyzstan
.kh – Cambodia
.ki – Kiribati
.km – Comoros
.kn – Saint Kitts and Nevis
.kp – Korea, Democratic People’s Republic
.kr – Korea, Republic of
.kw – Kuwait
.ky – Cayman Islands
.kz – Kazakhstan
So, what do you think the ccTld assigned to Kosovo will be? I propose it be .KO… it would certainly make for interesting sports domain hacks: boxing.KO, fighters.KO, UFC.KO etc.

A good Kosovo domain name ext. would be .ks / .kv / .ks

.ks or .ko would be great for domain hac.ks assuming they allow second level registration for non-residents.
Although .ko would be great for the fight niche, .ks would be much more widely usable: trac.ks, crac.ks, won.ks, span.ks, flan.ks, blan.ks, stic.ks, tan.ks, pic.ks, cran.ks, yan.ks, wan.ks, stin.ks, blin.ks, hon.ks, kic.ks, etc.
- Than.ks!

.ks I think is the one with the most possibilities…

I think .ks is thebest solution

The best & only one would be .KS (At least that’s what Kosovo would prefer/love).

Technically Kosovo is still Serbian province, and that want change any time soon, so I don’t think talking about Kosovo domain is appropriate.
I don’t think Kosovo will be approved for domain in the near future because Russia/Spain/India/China/Greece/Serbia and majority of countries don’t support self proclaimed independence of Kosovo’s “government”.
Germ, June 28th, 2008 at 12:53 am
Erm…you Serbian by any chance Keith?
The US (the country that brought you the Internet™) and 42 other UN countries recognize Kosovo’s independence. Saudi Arabia has also promised to recognize Kosovo. Even the “Republic of China” (Taiwan) recognizes them.
Of the 63 other UN member states that have not formally recognized it only a handful have rejected it. Most have simply stated they are prudently waiting to see what develops.
So your comment that the “…majority of countries don’t support self proclaimed independence of Kosovo’s “government”…” is misleading at best.

Kosovo already has a domain name – .rs
Germ, September 1st, 2009 at 11:54 pm
No, .rs is the ccTLD for Serbia.
Maybe you meant to insinuate that Kosovo is part of Serbia but the UN, the US and most of the world’s developed countries would disagree with that view.
According the CIA World Factbook, Kosovo became a Sovereign Republic on Feb. 17, 2008: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/kv.html
Arianit, September 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 am
@James ,Kosova ,is Kosova ,and , Serbia is Serbia ,they are two different contries ,Kosova has nothing with Serbia ,we are independent.

To Germ:
The fact is that Kosovo does not have a seat at the UN as an official ‘country’ or ’sovereign state’. Serbia has challenged the one-sided proclamation of independance claim via the ICJ and therefore, until there is a finalised resolution to the dispute, a ccTLD assigment to the territory of Kosovo should not be made.
The UN (particularly the 5 permanent members) will need to make the final decision on Kosovo, no matter how many other countries ‘recognise’ this territory.
Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1
Criteria for inclusion
Currently 246 countries, territories, or areas of geographical interest are assigned official codes in ISO 3166-1. According to the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency (ISO 3166/MA), the only way to enter a new country name into ISO 3166-1 is to have it registered in one of the following two sources:
United Nations Terminology Bulletin Country Names, or
Country and Region Codes for Statistical Use of the UN Statistics Division.
To be listed in the bulletin Country Names, a country must either be:
- A member country of the United Nations,
- A member of one of its specialized agencies, or
- A party to the Statute of the International Court of Justice.
The list of names in Country and Region Codes for Statistical Use of the UN Statistics Division is based on the bulletin Country Names and other UN sources.
Once a country name or territory name appears in either of these two sources, it will be added to ISO 3166-1 by default.

James,
See this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_specialized_agencies_of_the_United_Nations
Kosova is a member of IMF and WB so the conditions have been met for an ISO and domain name. There is even a wait list for OliverDespina.ks
dardanmiftari, November 27th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
I hope that .KS will be Kosovo’s ccTld
