Pizza.com sells for massive $2.6 million!

Chris Clark of North Potomac, Maryland bought Pizza.com in 1994 with the hope that the domain name would get his firm a consulting contract with a pizza company.

In 2000 he closed down his firm but kept paying the $20 renewal fee for the domain name. He sold ads on the domain up until January 2008.

After hearing about the $3 million sale of Vodka.com Chris decided to try his luck and see what sort of offers he’d get on pizza.com.

“I thought, ‘Why don’t I just try to see what the level of interest is?’” Mr Clark said. “If someone’s willing to pay that much for Vodka.com, maybe there’s more interest in pizza.com.”

The online auction was launched on 27 March. The first bid was $100, jumping to $2.6m a week later.

He says he now regrets not buying more domain names in 1994. Don’t we all :).
