Network Solutions is at it again

A while back I blogged about the dodgy domain front running practice of Network Solutions. Well, they were at it again recently - doing something similarly shady.

Since the revelation by techcrunch NetSol seems to have backed off and stopped doing this, but it is still important for the public to know what was going on.

Network Solutions was hijacking unassigned sub domains and delivering link filled holding pages for hundreds of thousands of sites.

The TechCrunch story talks about the subdomain app.gotgame.com which subsequently no longer resolves to any NetSol shady parking pages but at the time the issue was raised was resolving to some parking pages with Texas Holdem and other poker related ads.

This is absolutely amazing!?! Firstly they go and front run any domain search unknowing users look for through their domain search / registration facility and now they actually literally hijack sub domains owned by their customers.

I mean WTF??? What’s next? WIll NetSol start literally stealing their customers domain names?

Obviously once this story came out on TechCrunch and various other news pages NetSol made sure they switch of their brilliant new money making scheme to try and prevent another media backlash - obviously they got burned with the whole front runing deal.

I have to say this latest revelation - for me at least - is worse than the front running. This time they were actually making use of and making money directly off of their customers’ property.

If I was crazy enough to have some domain names at NetSol I would be so pissed off right now.

DNXpert:

I work at Network Solutions, so let tell me you what’s next.

I do appreciate the time you took to write express your feeling over this and your previous posts. We know how important this issue is for everyone, and not only did we listen, we’re acting.

Next week ICANN can vote an important issue to resolve to resolve front running for once and for all. We have advocated that ICANN acts now, and we have published an official statement on our web site to that end. Please excuse this URL, but given the seriousness of this issue, it was appropriate to provide a link: http://tinyurl.com/63yaox
