What is a domain hack?

A lot of people send me emails asking what is a domain hack?
A domain hack is an unconventional domain name that may combine a sub domain, a domain name and a domain extension (tld – top level domain) to spell out the full name of a domain, making a kind of play on words.
For example, the domain blo.gs uses the TLD .gs (South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands) to spell out the word blogs. The popular social bookmarking site Del.icio.us uses the sub domain del, the domain icio with the TLD .us (United States) to spell out the word Delicious. ma.gnolia.com is another interesting example.
Some top level domains (TLDs) offer more possibilities then others. The Italy ccTld .IT offers an unlimited array of possibilities combining verbs with the extension it ( do.it, play.it, game.it, buy.it etc ). The upcoming .me extension ( Montenegro ) is another candidate for popular domain hacks.
There are a couple of websites around that provide domain hack suggestion tools. I suggest Xona.com.

It’s funny as I have never read about this before. But this morning I saw the .es cc and was pondering over all the words you could spell with es at the end!
