New Plugin For WordPress – Video Comments
Posted on April 25th, 2008 by admin in Domain Development, Domain News | No Comments »
WordPress is such an amazing platform – as I have been saying all along – that developers are always outdoing themselves with new ways to improve user experience.
In that light, seesmic developed a new wordpress plugin that provides video comments. TechCrunch installed it yesterday and gave it a try… it looks pretty interesting.
Video comments bring a couple of problems along for the ride though. Techmeme listed five major reasons why video comments won’t really work for blogging.
Hard to scan – with text comments you can do a scan through tens or hundreds of comments and stop at the ones that interest you… with video comments you have to watch each one in order to see what the person is saying.
Hard to moderate – unless you watch each comment you have no clue what the person is saying.
They are inaccessible – due to lack of captioning.
You can’t leave links – part of leaving a comment for some people is also leaving linkbacks that point to their own blog… with video comments this is not possible.
They increase the loadtime – video comments increase the page load time big time.
That said it is still an interesting plugin. I don’t agree with techmeme that video comments don’t work. There are times when they can work very well. For example, if you announce a contest you can enable video comments for only the contest sponsors so they can describe their prizes. You can also enable comments for the contest winners to say thanks or whatever. I am sure there are other ways to use the plugin too…
