Sunrise begins for .me domain names

I reported about the .me tld over the past months here, here, here, here, here and here.

The .me country code top level domain is the ccTld for the newly independent country Montenegro ( in the Balkans ).

From today until May 20, anyone with a trademark is eligible to apply for a name with the .me ccTld.

Well, it’s official, the sunrise period is under way.

During the sunrise period, only owners of trademarks dated before June 28, 2006 may apply for a .me domain. After the sunrise period, the registry will be closed until June 6, at which point auctions will begin for the names which received multiple applications. Domains with only a single application will be awarded to the applicant.

The “Landrush” for public application will begin on June 6 and last until June 26, when the registry again closes. Similar auctions will take place for Landrush domains with multiple applications. Open registration will begin on July 17, and you can get your names through your favourite registrars.

ME domains, with their universal appeal, are expected to be in high demand. So some “premium” names – including verb-oriented domains, such as “Contact.ME,” “Drive.ME” or “Fly.ME,” – will be held back for auction after Open Registration. We will have more information available on premium auctions in the months to come.

Trademark holders may submit requests for .ME domains. After the sunrise period closes, domain names requested by multiple trademark-holders will be auctioned between the requesting parties.
Landrush5/6/08 - 6/26/08
(includes Pre-Registration)
Anyone may apply for a .ME domain name during this period. After Landrush closes, domain names requested by multiple parties will be auctioned between the requesting parties.
Open Registration 7/17/08
Domains issued on a first-come first-served basis.
