Paypal bug costing merchants thousands of dollars
Posted on May 26th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »
Various bugs are discovered on various applications on a daily basis – it’s a normal thing. I wouldn’t usually mention something like this but for the interesting circumstances.
The bug appears in Paypal’s subscription payments page and stops people from paying if they are from a different country then the site collecting the money. The bug is basically just an issue with the country drop down where the country selected is not being saved by the processing form.
You can see the original complaints here and here and the TechCrunch article here.
The interesting thing about this bug is that once again Paypal have failed to respond to people’s complaints in a timely manner and are in general unconcerned with the effect the whole affair is having on their reputation. If it’s a simple dropdown issue this can and should be resolved within a few minutes. Even if they have to get their code reviewed by their security experts it should still not be taking 10 days to fix.
This just adds to the level of mistrust directed towards PayPal from general users – something domainers have experienced in the past with regards to PayPal payment chargebacks and domaining scams.
