New York City To Get .NYC?
Posted on June 10th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 2 Comments »
A small group of New Yorkers, led by Tom Lowenhaupt of Queens, are pushing for a .nyc top level domain ( domain extension ).
The group, Connectingnyc, is putting together an open application that is expected (as much as bureaucracies can be expected) to begin next year, aiming to make the approval process for the next generation of top-level domains (like .com and .us) more standard and transparent.
The group has been campaigning on the streets of New York soliciting ideas for reserved domains for government use, like mayor.nyc, council.nyc, citytaxforms.nyc and traffic.nyc. Their aim is to get as many ideas as possible as to the possible useful use of .nyc domains determined by demand from the public.
ICANN has been criticized in the past for having a not-so-transparent approval process when it comes to top-level domains — as demonstrated by the .xxx domain, which Icann rejected (again) last March.
As a result of that criticism ICANN announced a process in which groups can essentially propose their own dot-whatevers if they had the financing and technical ability to handle the registration.
Currently, New York City is one of at least three cities pushing for a top-level domain under the new process. The other two are Berlin and Paris. ( Los Angeles residents may argue there is already a .la — but it refers to the country of Laos ).
New York City council is expected to introduce legislation to support the idea within the next few weeks according to councilwoman Gale A. Brewer.
“A .nyc address gives New York City a recognizable brand name on the World Wide Web,” Ms. Brewer said. “It lets New Yorkers and anyone else search for and find New York City businesses and nonprofit organizations, and helps us further enhance our economic development. It also shows that New York City is truly a digital community on par with the other tech centers across the globe.”
If you are a New York city resident or otherwise have ideas for useful .nyc domain names, you should head on over to the nytimes article covering the issue and make a comment.

Huh ? are they mad ? next thing you know people will be applying for .34broklyinstreet or may be .jmmyshotdogs
I think .nyc is a great idea as a city of that size has a larger economy and population than many of the countries that have ccTLDs.
One thing though, can we please put a limit on the length of the friggin’ TLD? I mean, .mobi and .asia are already pushing it (don’t talk to me about .museum) can’t Berlin be satisfied with .brl or Paris with .prs or .par? Do they really need .berlin and .paris? On this point I agree with Ehsan, put a cap on these or we’ll eventually end up with .oklahomacity or .nagasaki…
