162 Million Domain Names Registered Across All Tlds
Posted on June 17th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 1 Comment »
According to the .Com and .net registry VeriSign, there are 162 million domain names registered across all TLDs as of the end of the first quarter of 2008. In the company’s latest Domain Name Industry Brief (pdf), the company says new registrations have increased 17% compared to the previous quarter, although the overall base of domains grew only by 6%.
Interestingly, .Net is no longer the third most popular domain name extension. Chinse ccTld .Cn edged it out, perhaps due to its very cheap pricing. .Com and .De remain number one and two respectively ( although according to unofficial reports .Cn is overtaking .De ).

Extract from the report: The ccTLD growth was driven by a few ccTLDs that experienced remarkable double digit growth quarter over quarter, including .pl (Poland), .cn, .es (Spain), .ru (Russian Federation) and .fr (France). Growth for these domain names may have been driven by a variety of factors. For example, the .pl registry has enabled additional services
that encourage investment in domain names and a secondary market for .pl domain names. The .pl registry estimates that ten percent of its base is a result of these services that promote domain name investment and monetization.
