ICANN To Expand gTld Naming System?

Posted on June 26th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 1 Comment »

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board is meeting today to decide on two key proposals.

The first proposal is the long awaited move to allow non Latin charactered gTlds, meaning domain names using Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic letters ( full domain names including extensions ). The other proposal, the one that’s raising eyebrows around the globe, would allow domains to use nearly any letter or number combination, up to 64 characters as the domain tld.

What the second proposal – if passed – literally means is that you will be able to register almost any domain extension as long as you have the finances for it. So, we could soon see Hilton.hotel, Amateur.sex, Premiership.football, Asian.food etc

The touted fee for an entity to register a new tld, if the proposal is upheld by the ICANN board, is between $50,000 and $100,000.

The proposed ICANN move raises two concerns for the domaining world at large.

Firstly, if so many options are available to domain buyers, will the value of premium .com domains drop significantly? If a company can pay $100,000 and register a domain with a tld of their choice, why would they pay for that premium .com domain that they would have been desperate to get in the past? Is this a good time to start selling our best domain names while we can still cash in?

Secondly, how far do we go before the whole thing goes out of control? When will there be enough tlds? With a 64 character limit, there is an amazing number of permutations to consider. Or am I looking at this from the wrong angle. Perhaps this is just the kick up the backside the domaining world needs.

Thoughts?
