Getting Around Godaddy’s .Net And .Org Price Hike

Posted on August 29th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 9 Comments »

I am not sure whether you are aware of this but Godaddy have upped their price for .Net and .Org to an unbelievable $12.99 per year. Even if you use the coupon code gdbb776 you still have to pay $11.89 which is still way too high in my opinion.

Frankly I find it hard to understand considering everyone else is still sticking to their old prices, but heck, to each their own.

Well, if you want to avoid the price hike while keeping the bulk of your domain names at Godaddy and you have a bit of time, I have a solution to this issue.

Currently, you can register .Net domain names at Moniker for as low as $6.04 while MyDomains is offering .Orgs at $8.95.

The easy way to get your domains cheap and keep them at Godaddy is to register them at the above registrars, wait the transfer waiting period of 60 days then transfer them to Godaddy for $6.99 ( You get a 1 year extension ).

In effect you will be getting your .Net domains at $6.5 and your .Org domains at $7.99 per year over 2 years.

Nice tip – i’m going to be using it for a few names i have in mind.
The price hikes are very steep in my eyes. Shame as GD used to be good value.

“…wait the transfer waiting period of 60 days then transfer them to Godaddy for $6.99″

Don’t forget that Verisign is raising domain prices starting October 01.

The wholesale .COM rate will be $6.86.

When you add the 20 cent ICANN fee it rises to $7.06.

.NET will cost $4.43 with the ICANN fee.

These are the rates available to the Registrars.

It’s unlikely GoDaddy will offer domains below their cost.

If you move domains to GoDaddy as you suggest, then what about years 3, 4, 5, etc?

Best to stick with a good Registrar with attractive pricing all the time.

Don’t you think?

I am pretty sure this is only a temporary price hike for Godaddy.

Do you think anyone will stick around if their price stays at $13 for .net and .org.

Plus you can always use my technique and in 2 years time transfer to another registrar for $7 (you get a 1 year extension remember)?

I spoke to a GD sales rep two weeks ago and they mentioned that they were thinking of getting rid of or reducing the number of coupons they offer… Qualifer: I don’t know where this person stands in the company, they called me for a routine sales call and we got on the subject of coupons some how…

Hm, that should be an interesting move. They better publicize it well or there will be even less happy campers.

I know this is an old post, but I don’t see any place with this: the .org price is up again all the way to $20, yes TWENTY DOLLARS.
