Blogging Styles – Recognize Yours?

Posted on September 23rd, 2008 by admin in Domain Development, Domain News | No Comments »

Whenever I read a new blog, I try to classify it according to the styles the blog is written in. No, I don’t mean the blog’s css styles :) , I mean the “blogging styles” a blogger tries to impose on most
of their posts.

Before you read any further, let me remind you that these styles are not set in stone. Most blogs do quite well mixing various blogging styles over time.

Aggregating Blogs

A whole lot of blogs practice the aggregating blog style where they regularly provide numerous posts which are usually extracts that link to a full post located on another blog or website. The theme of these posts is as much determined by reader tastes as it is by the blogger themselves.

Examples of popular aggregating-style blogs are DavesDaily.com and Fark.com. Some posts on aggregating style blogs may be user suggested.

Recent times have seen the emergence of scraper blogs that leech blog content from other blogs – I do not consider that to be a blogging style. Scraper sites simply equate to content theft.

Niche Blogs

Many bloggers make a successful living blogging about a niche they are passionate about, or are an expert in. Brian Clark of CopyBlogger.com is an expert at writing good copy. John Motson writes daily about his views of the domain name industry at DNXpert.com. The guys over at IcanHasCheezBurger.com have done an amazing job getting crazy traffic to a blog that features funny cat pictures. PerezHilton.com is a highly popular blog that caters for the Hollywood gossip scene.

Web Guide Blogs

Web guide blogs create a limited amount of original material. They are renown for reporting early and are viewed as authority link finders. Some of my favourite industry guide blogs are TechCrunch.com, Engadget.com, BoingBoing.net. Many top guide blogs are powered by a team of bloggers because compared to an individual blogger, a team is far more capable of finding and reporting the latest information quickly. Most of them did originate as a result of an individual’s efforts though.

The Long Tail Blog

The long tail blogging style takes the longest to have an effect but it has a huge impact on a blog’s traffic. This style requires consistent, original blogging over a long period of time. Long-tail blogging is great as posts get found because search engines reward authoritative, original blog posts and longevity. Long tail blogging is perhaps most practiced by Niche bloggers.

What blogging style do you adhere to most of the time while blogging?
