Scammers Faking Godaddy’s ICANN Confirmation Mails
Posted on September 30th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »
The last few weeks have seen Godaddy mail multiple requests asking customers to double check their domain name contact details to “ensure accuracy”.
The emails are worded something like this:
It’s that time of year again. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) annually requires that all accredited registrars (like Go Daddy) ask their domain administrators/registrants to review domain name contact data, and make any changes necessary to ensure accuracy. According to our records you are the ADMINISTRATIVE CONTACT for one or more domains registered at GoDaddy.com, Inc. as of September 3rd, 2008
The email then proceeds to ask users to go to a link provided and check whether their contact information is correct. If there are any inaccuracies the domain owner is asked to log into their Godaddy account and make necessary adjustments.
According to DotWeekly, there have been a few recent cases of scammers impersonating Godaddy by sending out emails similarly worded from fake domain names like godaddywh0is.com (notice the zero in the domain name). The emails follow a similar pattern to the original email shown above and usually take you to fake login page that logs your username and password to be later used to steal your credentials.
To avoid being scammed make sure you always type the godaddy.com url into a browser rather then follow any links from emails.
