WeAre.Us – Interesting Concept But Potential Domaining Nightmare?
Posted on October 12th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 2 Comments »
When suffering from a chronic disease sometimes you only feel that people with the same condition can truly understand what you are going through. If a condition is rare, it can be difficult to find these people – WeAre.Us tries to help with its 16 social networks that connect people with chronic illnesses.
The current 16 social networks are distributed across 16 .org domain names (the .com domain names redirect to their .org equivalents): WeAreHD.org, WeAreEnd.org, WeAreLupus.org, WeAreHIV.org, WeAreCrohns.org, WeAreDiabetic.org, WeAreAutism.org, WeAreBNB.org, CancerCancer.org, WeAreTBI.org, WeAreCeliac.org, WeAreFirbo.org, WeAreBreathless.org, WeArePsoriasis.org.
I think is a huge domaining mistake that could have been avoided by running the various social networks under the one domain name.
Firstly, the 16 .orgs and .coms ad a financial overhead as each has to be renewed. It might not be much but it does ad up to total costs of running the websites.
Additionally, because of the approach of using separate domain names for each social network representing a chronic disease, they have to cover their bases for each chronic disease which they have done only in part. I noticed WeAreArthritis.org is registered under the same whois details, but WeAreAlzheimers.org is still available as are WeAreAids.org, WeAreOsheoporosis.org and numerous other combinations of “WeAre” + chronic condition domains.

Agreed. I think they have a great concept,
but the web execution there was
likely by someone who is terrific at running a support group, and compassionate to the suffering.
That’s why there has to be synergy between
people with ideas that should survive, and
webmasters.
Just one experienced domainer such as yourself John,
could have structured them in a way that they were already melting servers, and garnering [real] pr with Google.
16 social support nets up and running, kudos to weare.us! As they look to expand, I don’t think they’d be too upset if they don’t get the perfect domain for a new condition. Personally if I was searching for a support group and saw WeAreCeliac.com in organic search, I’d be more inclined to visit than if it was Celiac.WeAre.us. These are very personal medical issues and the perceived privacy may help traffic. Just my 2 cents.
