16 Stupidest Web 2.0 Domains

Posted on October 19th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 10 Comments »

We all know that web 2.0 names are IN – Google, Yahoo, Skype etc made sure of that. That said, I come across many web 2.0 names that just don’t cut it IMHO – they are stupid and in my opinion do not get the message across not to mention many times they are not even pronounceable.

I have compiled a list of 16 of the stupidest web 2.0 that I know of:

Fidj.It – is a free service that lets you share posts, links and more with your friends, family and co-workers. Like, what the…?

Qlubb.com – Create Your Own Qlubb – it’s fast, easy and free! Ok, so club was not available, Qlub was not available, so you went for the next best thing? Qlubb? It’s a no-brainer really.

Gridjit.com – A social portal. Perhaps you should have gone with the above idea – Gridj. It – would have had the same effect :) .

SSMunch.com – The music search engine. Sounds like a Nazi lunch break to me.

Paglo.com – The search engine for IT. They just went for a 5 letter domain name, any 5 letter domain name would have done it seems.

Truequi.com – Online exchange; change objects and give them life. Unless this means something in another language, I have no idea what they aimed for when thinking up this name.

Blippr.com – blippr is the easiest way to discuss, discover, and organize media with your friends. Blippr? Glippr? might as well have used bghfjs.com.

Frrvrr.com – Start the conversation. I am sorry but WTF??? How do you suppose you will ever promote this offline? How will folks remember your domain name online or offline? For God’s sake!?!

Fliiby.com – Your file library. Of course, when I read fliiby I immediately think of my file library (is your sarcasm meter beeping?)

Zlio.com – Create your store in just 5 minutes. The only thing you have going for you is that this is a 4 letter domain name.

Heekya.com – Your story lives here. My story certainly does not live there thank you very much.

Mzinga.com – Enable the conversation with Mzinga social solutions. “So, um, I am pleased to announce we will be um building our business community via Mzingra social platform.” Via what? Exactly.

Jiffr.com – get a date without words. Of course, the word Jiffr gets me dates all the time. How could it not?

Spottt.comFree link exchange? WTF, when I first saw the site I thought it was pet related – but obviously I was very wrong. In any case, you better register spotttt.com, spottttt.com, spotttttt.com or your competitors will get you :) .

Sullr.com – Reverse phone number lookup. Nothing speaks reverse phone number lookups like Sullr.

Kadoink.com – Enrich Your Mobile Messaging Engagement. Kadwhat? Selling pig products perhaps?

I mean seriously people. The products/services mentioned above could actually make it big – some already are – but why did you have to pick the first name that came to mind? What’s more worrying is why Sullr, Spottt, Jiffr etc was the first thing that came to mind?

Please, think before you register. Your domain name is an essential part of your online brand – don’t screw it up.

    This gave me a laugh!

I know very little about domaining, but these make the few 5 letter domains I have look quite valuable!!

  2. Hey,

    Just to let you know.

TruequE is a sort of trade used in many places up to nineteen century and even some part of the 20th. It’s a spanish word so I think they aimed to Trueque… it was not available so they end up with TruequI..

    Hope it helps.

    All best,
    Will

Thanks for clearing it up Will!

  4. I list several risks for domainers in my last blog post and your post seems to illustrate one of these very well. What if the “public” never gets that so called quality domain names are valuable? Or at least does not get so educated in a reasonable amount of time. Maybe we’re simply wrong on average as domainers. (Shouldn’t be surprised since even in mature markets, most speculators lose money.) For every example of a business that was made successful by using the right category killer domain name there are 10 web businesses that became successful simply ignoring whether they had the best domain name and presumably concentrating on other more important business factors. Just a thought to help us understand our buyers.

Excellent. We try so hard to explain why web 2.0 domains are bad. Listing them like this makes it much easier to understand why these are so bad.

  6. Phil B says:

Great post – glad to see we’ve passed the pen island stage lol! The only thing worse than some of their domain names is their (non-existent) revenue model.

The sad thing is that some of these sites represent some good ideas – others (like spottt) are hard to take seriously as businesses.

Its a shame that the bible for many web designers – Don’t Make Me Think – didn’t begin with a chapter on domain names.

  7. Solid Namer says:

Yearh I guess many of those companies did not want to pay for a better domain. Brandable, good sounding 5 letter domains can easily be bought for under 400$, even 60$! But hey, these companies contribute to the increased value of the ones that actually do sound good.

  8. Valineo says:

I agree with this, some of those name are really funny ones and owners could get much better names for their services… who did even think of some of those names?!

  9. Rachel Shaw says:

Great Resource! I am adding your blog to my favorites, given my interest in finding domain names. One of the sites that can help find great name suggestions is http://www.squadhelp.com. Most individuals receive 200+ domain name suggestions in 2 days for just $50. It is an online community of people who submit ideas – and the best idea wins the award amount. It sure beats the time and energy I would have spent myself to come up with names. You might want to check them out. Just thought your readers might find it interesting!
