A Great Market To Buy Cheap Domains Is Born!

Posted on October 29th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 11 Comments »

A couple of days ago popular domain news aggregation site Domaining.com launched a new and unique domaining service called ExpiringDomains.com.

ExpiringDomains.com is a marketplace that allows you to sell your – you guessed it – expiring domains and allows you to buy some excellent domain names at bargain prices.

We all have expiring domain names that for one reason or another we won’t renew – instead of letting them expire and get snapped up by other domainers – why not sell them?

One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure? You never know what gem you might find that others may deem not worthy of a renewal. Instead of letting the domain name drop and get exposed to many competitor domainers, why not snap it up on the cheap at expiringdomains.com?

How does the service work?

Each day at 3:00pm EST they put all newly available domains up for sale to their “premium members.” One hour later their “normal members” will then have the chance to buy them. Each domain gets listed at $100 and goes down $10 a day (at 5:00pm EST) for 7 days. After 7 days domains are sold at $30.

I think this is an excellent and refreshing concept that will be well accepted in the domaining community. After all, we all have expiring domains and we all are on the lookout for bargain domains.

Check it out at ExpiringDomains.com.

I suspect it will be hard to find a wanted domain.

I looked through the current list and all I found was dreck.

  2. VirtualReit says:

So what exactly constitutes a “Premium” member, as distinguished from their “Normal” members (there is precious little information on their site to explain the difference between the two, or any apparent means for upgrading one’s “membership” to “Premium” status)?

Seemingly, mere “Normal” members are left to chew on the unwanted “scraps of the scraps of the scraps” (i.e., that which absolutely everyone else — including the original, non-renewing name holder! — has already passed on)!

@VirtualReit: Hm, good question, hopefully the owner gets back to us and explains the different.

Looks quite interesting! will take a look

    Thanks for the post John.
As I don’t run a blog it’s very appreciated because it lets me the opportunity to respond to questions people may have.

For the moment only few persons have the Premium status. If you are a reader of our newsletter you know who they are.
Premium memberships will begin to be sold within the next days, it will cost $x.00 (to define) per month and will simply give you the chance to see the new daily listings one hour before the normal members (those that have free access). It’s not a lot but it can make the difference.

    Regarding Johnny comment.
    - The domains are today submitted by domainers like you and me so they probably don’t generate ppc revenue. But a lot of them have a resell value that is strongly over $100.
    - We should largely advertise the service within the next months to reach simple domain owners that don’t want to renew their names. This should lead to can list names for sale with ppc value.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Francois.

I agree, perhaps the domains listed today are not exceptional, but we have to remember that the service only launched 2 days ago.

With the aid of promotions via Domaining.com and various other outlets, I am sure in the next few weeks we will see domain names of a much higher quality listed.

@Johnny – think about it, how many domain names did you let go simply because you didn’t see them paying you back in revenue over the next year – yet you considered them OK in terms of sell on value? This outlet provides you with an opportunity to get something back from domains that you would have otherwise let go. Now, consider there are thousands of us out there that let go of domain names from time to time.

“For the moment only few persons have the Premium status. If you are a reader of our newsletter you know who they are.”

I AM an avid reader of your Newsletter — have been from the very date of its inception — and I have absolutely NO idea “who they [the so-called "Premium Members"] are …but, one thing’s for sure — I can tell you with ironclad certainty that I’m NOT a “Premium Member”, and there continues to be no apparent means for me to become one (other than by opening my wallet to a stranger) …which really strikes me as one of the oldest tricks in the book! This entire industry is growing increasingly weary of the absence of transparency — seemingly at every turn — and the appearance of impropriety. Did any of this ever dawn on you guys while you were busy developing this platform?!?

  8. admin says:

Fair comment VirtualReit – and not wanting to take sides here – I do see a similarity between a premium membership I offer at the DNXpert forum and this one offered by ExpiringDomains. What sort of transparency are you looking for apart from the obvious option to become a premium member – which perhaps Francois could have held back on until it was ready for general consumption?

NameJet, Pool, SnapNames are huge services yet they don’t offer much in terms of transparency – probably for other reasons (corporate monetary gain perhaps?) but also because it’s physically impossible.

  9. VirtualReit says:

In the interests of utmost simplicity, my comments were merely intended to illuminate the glaring fact that these guys have gone to all the trouble to “identify, acknowledge and disclose” some form of preferential treatment (i.e., “Premium Membership”) in the process — without ever adequately explaining why some (and not others) are eligible for such preferential treatment; and without providing any real mechanism for others to gain similar favor. Why!?! Because there isn’t any! “Premium membership” is an insiders deal that accrues only to the guys who built the platform. And I’m totally cool with that …but, let’s just call it what it is, rather than skirt around the issue with some masquerade which purports to make some legitimate (and transparent) distinction between so-called “Premium Members” and “Normal Members.”

    means for how some

  10. admin says:

I think there was no shady intentions there. ExpiringDomains simply revealed that there was a Premium membership ahead of themselves – I am sure within a few days all Newsletter subscribers ( I am one ) will get an email telling them how they can sign up for the premium membership – hence leveling the playing field if you are willing to stump up the cash – which is fair enough in my eyes.

But, I will let Francois enlighten us on this one if he wishes to do so.

In any case I am sure he is happy with some healthy discussion on the matter – he has been encouraging comments and discussion all along.

  11. Francois says:

I don’t understand very well what VirtualReit is trying to tell me.
As I said, the Premium membership will be available within the next days for anyone.
It has only been offered today to few friends for thanks them their help.
The ones who will be interesting by this option and will pay the monthly membership will get the same advantage these few members are getting. It’s full transparency I think.
