German MP Blocks Local Wikipedia

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, is very popular in Germany. According to the Wikipedia.org start page, the German Wikipedia has 825,000+ articles which makes it the second largest edition right behind the English version of the site.
A lot of people were shocked this weekend to find that Wikipedia.de (the url most German folks use to access the German Wikipedia version) was redirected to a different website which read as follows:
The county court of Luebeck (North Germany) has issued an order in the name of Lutz Heilmann, Member of Parliament (left party/post-communist) that the German Wikipedia (Wikimedia e.V.) must not allow linking its domain wikipedia.de to the Web site wikipedia.org, as long as the German language version of wikipedia.org makes certain statements.
The problematic statements relate to mentions of Heilmann’s past – he was a member of the infamous East German Secret Service – the Stasi. There are also allegations that he has threatened an ex-boyfriend.
It’s funny as OhMyNews mentions that Heilmann took local action to try and conceal this information when the information is still freely available on both the English and German versions of Wikipedia whose servers are in Florida under US laws. He would have been better off trying to fight the articles the Wikipedia way – with an edit war
.
Still, it seems like he has been down that path too as TechCrunch rightly points the article has been number 1 on Wikirage‘s list of most edited articles.

Some of us lack moral fiber. Others lack a thread of decency. And then there are those who are just plain dumb. Heilmann wins the all-three award. Huzzah, err I mean… Heil!
Mr Heilmann should have considered what effect his actions would have had on his reputation. Now he’s even worse off than before. Luckily, the content is hosted outside the court’s jurisdiction, so he could only take the .de domain down.
