Major Brands Call For Halt of gTld 2009 Revamp
Posted on December 17th, 2008 by admin in Domain News | 6 Comments »
A host of major brands are calling for ICANN to stop or rethink its plans to revamp the gTld naming system.
According to Broadcast & Cable magazine, as picked up by DNJournal.com, and as confirmed by ANA itself, the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), in a letter to ICANN CEO Dr. Paul Twomey, called the proposal premature and counterproductive. ANA represents over 9,000 brands that annually spend $100 billion on advertising and marketing.
ANA Executive VP Daniel Jaffe stated,
“Presently, ANA’s members expend substantial sums of money monitoring domain name abuse, defensively registering domains (sometimes in the hundreds or even thousands) and prosecuting squatters and other violators. These new costs are likely to escalate substantially”
“Our comments argue that such a move raises significant questions that deserve careful further investigation. We contend it would be premature to take this action without a much more thorough risk/benefit analysis. We note that the proposal could impose major cost on advertisers in order to protect their brands and guard against brand infringement. Anyone would be able to apply for a top level domain, meaning companies would have to expend large sums of money in guarding against dilution of their brands.”
This just goes to underline what a lot of have been saying all along – there really is no need for new gTlds especially since a lot of the stuff already made available is under-used – see .info, .biz and even .mobi and .asia.

I agree with ANA. Any changes to the gTLD will only confuse the marketplace and cause greater burden to company’s who are trying to already manage their branding. Thanks for posting this article as I had not heard the ANA was this aggressive in the matter.
Me too, I think new gTlds according to their proposal would just throw everything into disarray.
I am surprised more domainers aren’t talking about this in the forums. I think it’s a good thing if they stop this rollout – it’s a big issue. It’s also good for current domainers and their portfolios, because it keeps the supply of possible domains and extensions from growing too fast.
I agree, domainers have been fairly quiet on this matter – probably been too busy cover their own asses.
Icann is one of the most easily confounded groups in history. gTLDs will take upwards of 5-10 years to get off the ground. Hold onto those .orgs and .nets because they aren’t getting replaced anytime soon!
