Groundbreaking Global Domain Registration Industry Report Release By MAP

Posted on December 23rd, 2008 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »

MAP Research, a Melbourne-based research company, has released what they claim to be “the world’s first report on the size, state and future of the global domain registration industry”. They interviewed a number of the top 20 domain registrars globally to formulate their data.

Amongst the things shown by MAP Research report is the current value of the domaining industry – valued at around $3.6 billion. The value of the industry is forecast to increase to $5.3 billion by 2011.

Predictably, the report claims that over the coming period of time the overall market size will increase but it will increase at a slower rate due to the global recession. A drop in average revenue per domain is also forecast. The report forecasts a growth in ccTld domain registartions (.au, .uk etc) and a slowdown in major tTld registrations – something which has also been predicted by the recent Nominet report.

“Domain registrars are now becoming ‘one-stop-shop’ service providers, offering their customers variety of services such as domain registration, domain management, web hosting and domain resale,” said Marco Marcou, MAP Research Director.

“With the contractions of the top-level market, many of the global domain registrars are diversifying their revenue base by providing a number of related value added services to the provision of domain registration,” he added.

“These additional services are increasingly being bundled with domain registration and include web hosting, domain parking, pay-per-click advertising and selling domain portfolios,” said Marcou.
