Controversy, Hype And Copycats – MysteryDomainAuction.com Off To A Flying Start

Posted on January 2nd, 2009 by admin in Domain News | 8 Comments »

It has been 24 hours since the launch of the mystery domain auction and boy have we seen a reaction from the web community at large!

First and foremost, the auction got off to a great start with bidders placing 236 bids in the first 24 hours (at the time of writing this) totaling up to $235.85 with the current high bid of $2.02 placed by a Colon Cleanser (lol) – which just goes to show the mystery domain auction is a hit in all spectrums of the online world.

Additionally, we have been inundated with requests for the all-pay-auction script that the mystery domain auction uses via email – folks who think the idea is brilliant and want to make something similar of their own. Someone even registered the domain name allpayauctionscript.com where they plan to develop and sell an all-pay auction script to the general public. Another person has registered MysterySiteAuction.com where they plan to auction of their own websites.

Finally, the domaining world at large is split between the fans and detractors of the mystery domain auction idea. Various domaining blogs have covered the topic while there is a discussion going on at NamePros too.

Overall, a great first day for the mystery domain auction. Onto the second.

  1. John,
Congratualtions on the launch of MysteryDomainAuction.com. You are a real genius. I wish you every success.

I believe this kind of auction could definitely revolutionise the domain industry.

  3. John,

As it is was once said, “Imitation is the highest form of flattery”. We think the auction model you have used can be leveraged in so many really cool and beneficial ways and in so many niches. We hope to be able to provide marketers with a raw script that does what your site does so well within the next week or will be happy to become an affiliate of your company if you do plan to release the script anytime soon.

Here is Cheers! to a brilliant twist on auction marketing.

    Chris

John: I can see why there are detractors, since in essence it’s similar to MillionDollarHomePage. But if you pull it off, I’d be more impressed than upset. Good luck to ya! One thought: could you provide some type of site stats so bidders know there’s some value in outbound clicks on their URL?

  5. RKB says:

This is no doubt a brainy idea, but I am wondering how did it “revolutionize the domain industry”?

    Please explain?

  6. admin says:

RKB – I can foresee lots of domainers selling their domain names with all pay auctions in the future, but that’s not the revolutionary part.

The revolution will come as a result of mainstream attention being directed at the domaining world as a result of the mysterydomainauction’s success.

@Chris, I don’t intend on selling the script – you are free to do as you please, as I can’t really stop you now can I.

I am at least glad the mysterydomainauction has inspired the idea for this script you are about to create – if you manage to create it.
