AOL Acquires MMAFighting.com – Watch Out Shoemoney!

Posted on July 18th, 2009 by admin in Domain News | 5 Comments »

aolI read an interesting bit of news from MediaWeek.com via DotWeekly.com yesterday – AOL have acquired the domain name and website MMAFighting.com for an undisclosed fee.

According to AOL’s execs the plan is:

to eventually merge MMAFighting.com, which launched in 2001, with the existing MMA channel within AOL’s own sports site FanHouse.

The sites will then emphasize covering major MMA events, while also offering interviews with top stars from the sports’ various leagues. It will also serve as a fan community.

Why is this interesting? Doesn’t the aim of the site sound familiar? Well, I think it’s interesting as this will put AOL’s newly acquired site in direct contention with Jeremy Shoemoney‘s recently launched Fighters.com which aims to do the same – provide fighter interviews, news and a community for MMA fans.

I am sure Shoemoney is aware of AOL’s recent purchase and is already planning on upping the stakes on his project – but it will be interesting to see whether he can compete with a giant like AOL – what with their massive resources and man hours at hand.
