Hong Kong Hosting ICANN’s Discussion of New TLDs

Posted on July 23rd, 2009 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »

icannA discussion about the proposed new top level domains to be introduced by ICANN will take place in Hong Kong this Friday. ICANN will look to ease worries about the new generic tlds by conducting a consultation session – one of five to be held on the matter (Sydney, New York, London, and Abu-Dhabi holding the others).

The new domains are proposed to be anywhere from 3 to 63 characters in length and would support Chinese, Arabic and other scripts.

ICANN is hoping to appease corporations with large portfolios of domain names who are still pushing for a go-slow approach having voiced their concerns over trademark issues, cybersquatting and other deceptive practices such as phishing that could result from such a drastic change in architecture.

Not everyone is opposing the proposed change in architecture. A number of groups have already announced plans to apply for new gTLDs representing cities such as .paris, regions like .africa, not-for-profit organizations like .green, and generic terms like .food and .wine. Some companies plan to reserve their own tlds (e.g .deloitte).

It appears ICANN is pushing ahead with it’s planned architecture change and is hoping the discussions sessions will iron out any opposition prior to the big launch.

“ICANN has announced that they will start taking applications in the first quarter of 2010,” said Brian Cute, vice president of Afilias, which is providing back-end services to the proposed .eco domain for environmental information. “ICANN is going to be publishing a third version of its guidebook [for new gTLD applicants]…so they are going to be reaching a decision relatively soon.”

Tim Switzer, vice president of NeuStar Registry Services, said ongoing discussion is mainly concerning the following issues: protection for trademarks and intellectual property; whether registrars can operate new gTLD registries; how community and geography-based gTLDs will be evaluated; and the fast tracking of foreign language domains.

“These are some of the areas that are still in play that ICANN is continuing to work through,” Switzer said.
