Facebook Gets Facebook.ir Through WIPO
Posted on August 3rd, 2009 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »
It’s publicly known that Facebook owns the Facebook domain name in almost all known domain name extensions. The word “almost” will probably not be needed in that statement soon as another ccTld falls by the wayside – WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organization) has ruled in favour of Facebook in the case of Majid Karimian Ghannad vs Facebook for Facebook.ir (Iran’s ccTld).
Facebook recently announced they were launching a Persian version of their site – following the Iran unrest – and this probably brought the Facebook.ir domain name to their attention. Once they realized it was already registered their lawyers went into action.
Mr Ghannad of Yazd, the Islamic Republic of Iran, represented by Dr. Mansoor Aminilari claimed that he was “us[ing] facebook.ir as a Persian expression for the face of a book”. He also claimed that “it is my right to use a name that belongs to my thought in order to build up an eBusiness with the goal of selling books after my graduation.”
Obviously, the decision was quite simple in this case. Quoting the WIPO panel’s decision page:
7. Decision
For all the foregoing reasons, in accordance with paragraphs 4(i) of the Policy and 15 of the Rules, the Panel orders that the domain name
be transferred to the Complainant.
