.AE Domain Registrations Up By 30%
Posted on October 4th, 2009 by admin in Domain News | 1 Comment »
UAE’s top level domain (.ae) registrations have increased by a massive 30% this year says the ccTld’s registry with the most registrations coming from the country’s capital, Dubai. The growth is reportedly a result of the new policy framework and a non-monopolistic environment among registrars.
“In the period August 2008 to August 2009, the number of new registrations increased by 30 per cent compared to the corresponding period the year before. There are more registrars providing .ae domain name registration. Customers have the choice to select their registrar as competition leads to better service. The registration process brought online has also made it easier,” said the country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority – TRA.
Following the registry restructure, aeDA currently has 15 accredited registrars in the UAE and abroad. The restructuring process has broken the monopoly held previously by one or two companies and allowed the public to make a choice when choosing their registrar for their .ae domain names. It also helps that customers are now able to register .ae domain names online instead of by submitting registration forms in person. This can only be good for the region and online business in general as e-commerce is still in its infancy in the Middle East.
Kamal Nasser, CEO of Conservus International, based in Dubai, said:
“It’s the only way forward. However, unfortunately e-commerce sites are practically non-existent in the region although statistics show more than $1 billion was spent on e-commerce in Saudi Arabia through purchase of goods from American and European sites.”
The potential is definitely there in this part of the country and moves like the recent restructuring by aeDA are steps in the right direction as confirmed by this latest increase in .ae registrations.
.ae is the internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the UAE. It is administered by .aeDA, which is part of TRA.

I have no idea if they will follow up on their comments ??
“The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), which oversees the .ae domain, said it will take action against anyone found registering domain names with the sole intention to sell them on for a profit.”
