BroadwayShows.com Overpriced – Food for Thought Or Something Else?

Rick Latona‘s upcoming domain auction at T.R.A.F.F.I.C New York features a list of category killer domain names including BroadwayShows.com – a name that’s stirred up a discussion amongst domainers and non-domainers alike today.
Broadway shows’ blog nytix.com brought the whole thing to a head when it reported that the domain name BroadwayShows.com is up for auction “again” – indicating that the same domain name has been auctioned off numerous times in the past with varying degrees of success – and pointing out that none of the past purchasers bothered to develop the name into a proper site.
NYTix also claims that the name at its current reserve price is way overpriced
This domain name has so much promise, but with a reserve price of $800,000, its unclear who would want it. (referring to the high reserve price of the domain name)
The blog goes on to claim that the real value of this domain name is closer to 1/20th of the reserve price
They would love the traffic from this URL, but only at a 1/20th of the price
Over at thedomains.com domainers have gone over the blogger’s comments and have given their thoughts on the matter…
Although the guy brings up some interesting points, here is my take on the whole ordeal.
1. The blogger contradicts himself on more than one occasion – none more so then when he states the following:
What it does have going for it is a great set of keywords, two keywords in particular, that almost certainly guarantee a top slot in Google when some real Broadway show content is finally posted.
So, he is more than aware that this is a category killer domain name – and in my opinion for a category killer domain name you have to pay a top price.
(I am not saying what the domain name is worth – that shall be determined at auction soon enough)
2. The following statement made me chuckle:
URL is too generic, investment amount is obscene.
According to that, nytix would prefer to have NewYorkDoctors.com over Doctors.com because Doctors.com is just too generic. Or more closer to home, he would prefer BroadwayShows.com over Broadway.com for the same reason.
3. The blogger is more aware of the domaining scene than he leads on as he clearly is aware of domaining conferences – he mentions the TRAFFIC 2008 Domain Conference & Expo in his piece. He also goes on to talk about the “eminent domain law” which is something way outside the scope of someone simply blogging about Broadway.
4. And finally, as someone (Domain Investor) points out on thedomains.com, perhaps nytix.com has a vested interest in playing down the value of this category killer domain name because if bought, the domain name would take the category by storm and wipe out much of the profit he currently makes from selling affiliate products via his blog.
In any case, I thought I’d state my opinion as the whole thing bugged me for some reason (Just for the record, I am in no way affiliated with Rick Latona or BroadwayShows.com)
