Egypt To Launch World’s First Purely Arabic Domain Extension

Egyptian communications minister Tarek Kamel has announced that Egypt will launch the world’s first purely Arabic domain extension.

The extension “.Masr” written in Arabic, which translates as “.Egypt” will launch today, Monday 17 November 2009 starting from 2200 GMT.

“It is a great moment for us… The internet now speaks Arabic,” Mr Kamel said.

Mr Kamel said the new domain would “offer new avenues for innovation, investment and growth” in the Arabic-speaking world.

Egypt currently boasts some 15 million internet users out of a total population of 80 million.

Mr Kamel was speaking at the start of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) being held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
