Stupid Spammers Using RegistrantSearch Results To Make Money?

Posted on November 24th, 2009 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »

I guess no matter how useful a tool is, there is always going to be more then a few people looking for blackhat or even “shithat” (did I just coin a new term) ways to abuse this tool in order to try and make a quick buck.

A couple of days ago Jeremy over at Shoemoney.com discovered that a spammer under the alias Dominic Fernandez has been spamming Shoemoney’s commenters with an email offering to sell what amounts to Jeremy’s registrant information for a fee.

The email that Shoemoney’s commenters were spammed with read as follows:

From: Dominic Fernandez [mailto:domrfernandez@gmail.com]
Sent: 22 November 2009 08:12
To: you
Subject: Shoemoney Data

Hi,

My name is Dominic Fernandez, and I came across your contact information while reading through The ShoeMoney Blog. I don’t know your opinion of his advice, but I think his advice is very insightful and obviously very profitable if applied to the right opportunity.

Finding the right opportunity however is something Jeremy does not dwell on too much, and does not mention (with good reason) most of the current opportunities he is working on.

In an effort to find a great opportunity to earn money with I have sourced the list of all Websites owned by Shoemoney (3400+ Domains). I need to raise a little extra funds to complete the transaction and hence I will be making a few copies of this data available for sale. I obviously do not want too many copies of this Data to get out and hence will be limiting the sale to only a select few people.

If you are interested in this Data, let me know and we can discuss the
matter further.

Thank you,

Dominic

Firstly, according to comments posted on the above-mentioned thread, the guy mostly contacted folks that have commented on Jeremy’s blog in the past – i.e. he probably went to the trouble of going to each person’s blog and using their contact form, or he found a more automated way to do that – perhaps by crawling all the commenters’ urls and using a whois script to email the technical/administrative contacts of each domain name?

In any case, what he is basically selling is a list of domain names associated with Jeremy Schoemaker – a list which can easily be purchased using DomainTools’ RegistrantSearch tool.

According to DomainTools’ RegistrantSearch, Jeremy owns some 215 domain names and some 29 domain names are associated with the same email address that can be found in the whois info of ShoeMoney.com.

Registrant Search:”Jeremy Schoemaker” owns about 215 other domains.
Email Search:is associated with about 29 domains

The spammer’s claim of possessing a list of 3400+ domain names associated with Shoemoney leads me to believe that either this spammer was a past associate of Jeremy’s and has access to inside information (perhaps Jeremy uses other email addresses for other domain names/niches) or he has inflated the total number of domain names owned by Shoemoney for effect.

Either way, the spammer seems to believe that he can get people to pay for a service which is directly offered by sites like DomainTools for a fee, by feeding them a story about succeeding by getting an insight into how a successful internet marketer operates.

Innovative? Perhaps. A “shithat” way to use a tool such as RegistrantSearch? Definitely!

Thoughts?
