TwitterLotto To Jackpot on Christmas Day

22 year old Pete Danihel, a student attending Mount Royal University, Canada, recently launched a project that earned him a 100% on his marketing final and might earn him quite a bit of money now that he got his grade in.
The project in question is PeepLotto.com (formerly known as TwitterLotto) – a website that has a jackpot total directly influenced by the number of Twitter followers the site has – the jackpot grows by $1 for every follower twterlotto receives. At the time of writing this, the jackpot is at $1407.
The site works on a system where all followers of the above mentioned twitter account immediately become eligible for the jackpot prize – the winner will be drawn by Mike Yawney and Nick Blakeney at CityTV in Calgary on December 25, 2009 (Christmas Day).
How does the site make money?
The kid has come up with an interesting monetization concept. He is getting advertisers to pay 1 cent / follower based on twterlotto follower count that the advertiser wants to tweet their message to.
Reading from the site’s advertise page:
Advertising prices are based on how many Twitter followers you want to reach. The price is currently fixed at $10.00 per 1000 followers (1 ยข per follower). So if you want to reach 5000 followers, you would pay $50.00 to Tweet your ad. The tweet will go out as soon as the Peep Lotto account reaches 5000 followers.
So, considering the amount of press PeepLotto is getting (DNXpert coverage included
), the kid can expect to have a 10000 follower count pretty soon which means he will be getting $100 from each advertiser wishing to have their message tweeted to the 10000 followers. If PeepLotto gets 100000 followers, an ad will cost $1000. You get the drift.
Thumbs up to Pete for an innovative idea and best of luck in upping that follower count. Go follow http://twitter.com/twterlotto now!
On another Twitter note, Thanks Giving is coming up in the US and TurkeyTwitter.com are collecting and displaying all Tweets that include #turkeytwitter or #thanksgiving tags – another interesting site idea.
