.cn And .fm Get Bad Wrap From PCMag Security Watch
Posted on December 1st, 2009 by admin in Domain News | 1 Comment »
With holiday deals and online promotions come cyber theft and security issues – these things go hand-in-hand these days.
Larry Seltzer of PCMag.com did a quick write up of how customers can protect themselves when shopping online in the holiday season mentioning Neil Rubenking’s post and tech tips from Sunbeltblog as good guidelines to staying safe.
Whois.net got a nice promotion in the write up while .CN (ccTld of China) and .FM (ccTld of Micronesia) were mentioned as top level domain names not commonly used by US retailers – a mention which may lead the reader to deduce that these are domains best avoided when shopping online for goods in the holiday season?
(Interestingly, a friend of mine’s Facebook account got hacked yesterday and was littered with .cn links to retail shopping).
The short article went on to mention some more traditional advice including “don’t buy items through spam e-mails, keep your anti-virus up to date. apply all patches to your operating system, browser and Acrobat Reader. Finally, use common sense: If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.”
Was Larry right about .FM and .CN? Thoughts?
PS. Check out the 3 comments the article currently has. Nice promotion for their .com websites
(cough:spam).
