Sites That Make Numbered Domains Work

When their ideal .com domain is not available, some creative people turn to using a keyword combined with numbers as their domain name of choice.

Obviously, common number combinations like 247, 365 or 101 are very popular, but there are also sites that have created their brands around other numbers with equal success.

My choice for the best site with a 247 domain name is FlashGames247.com. With an Alexa rank of 3,322 they are definitely a giant in the numbered domains game – no pun intended.

A site I regularly visit (on a daily basis) that boasts a 365 domain name is Football365.com. They get tonnes of traffic, as backed up by their Alexa rank of 3,654. They are one of the most popular football (soccer) sites on the web.

Studio7Designs.com – An award winning website and logo brand development company that has created a successful brand around a numbered domain name. They boast an Alexa rank of 30,948 and a huge portfolio.

Hi5.com – Hi5.com is an international social network that enables members to stay connected and share stuff. Their Alexa rank is 50!

4shared.com – A free file-sharing website with a whopping Alexa rank of 83. Their domain starts with a digit which makes them extra special.

1and1.com – A website that claims to be the “World’s #1 Webhosting Company” – I am sure a lot of people have different opinions on that, but you can’t doubt their Alexa rank of 1,667.

Super8.com – An online hotel reservation service with an envious Alexa rank of 39,354 – quite good for a site that doesn’t feature regularly updated content.

o2.co.uk – European mobile phone network provider, offering mobile phones and services, and range of tariffs (they also own o2.com). They are definitely helped by having such a short and memorable domain name.

As you can see, lots of people have successfully branded a numbered domain name. In my opinion, it is better to go with a number combination then to choose a misspelling – as described in the domain naming mistakes post we featured a few days ago.

  1. shhhh. Numbers are bad. There’s no value in a domain name with numbers. There is nothing to see hear. Move on.

Seriously though, your point about branding is critical. You really need to build something of value and keep the numbers relevant to the brand. I also highly recommend choosing keyword heavy names to go with it, like your football and flash games examples. There’s a lot of unregistered and untapped potential in these types of names. For now though, don’t expect to be able to flip them for cash or park them for type ins.
