Should Brett Favre Go After BrettFavre.com?

Posted on January 19th, 2010 by admin in Domain News | 2 Comments »

Quarterback Brett Favre carved his name in NFL folklore while playing for the Green bay Packers between 1992 and 2007. He was so revered by the fans in Wisconsin that there is a “Brett Favre Pass” in Green Bay and Mayor Jim Schmitt proposed renaming the city’s main thoroughfare “Brett Favre Boulevard” in 2008.

Not so any more though, as following a brief stint with the New York Jets in 2008, Brett Favre came out of retirement in 2009 to join the Packers’ sworn enemies, the Minnesota Vikings.

Such is the line between love and hate, the latest development has left a sour taste with many a Packers fans. Even Mayor Schmitt turned to what seems his favorite tool in the box: re-naming a street. When the Vikings went to play Green Bay in November 2009, Minnesota Avenue was temporarily re-named Aaron Rodgers Avenue, after the Packers’ new quarterback.

Others turned to the internet as a way of venting their fury at what they deemed to be desertion. While some fans talked it up on various forums, a Brett Favre fan website chose to feature Favre’s career all the way up to 2007 – perhaps purposefully ignoring his current stint at the much hated Vikings. It is also interesting to note the banner image showing Favre holding off a Vikings player while running with the ball.

All innocent stuff right?

Perhaps not so. While Brett Favre’s official website is at OfficialBrettFavre.com, BrettFavre.com is operating under the “innocent to the eye” veil of a disgruntled fan venting his fury at his idol – an angle many news agencies like HispanicBusiness.com went after when reporting the story.

However, a little investigation shows that BrettFavre.com is one of a number of professional athlete names developed by AthleteWebServices.com. While the AWS portfolio features names legitimately developed for clients like EmittSmith.com, CadillacWilliams.com, ZazaPachulia.com etc, it appears BrettFavre.com is an exception?! More alarmingly, BrettFavre.com sells Brett Favre products from it’s store, meaning it is directly profiting from the Brett Favre name and brand.

Should Brett Favre go after BrettFavre.com much like Jerry Seinfeld went after Jerry Seinfeld.com in 2008? I think it’s an open and shut UDRP case.

Favre is way too laid back to even care about it. You’d think whoever’s managing his brand would’ve looked into it when they created his official site in ’04.

I’m with you though, he’d win easily.

I think he should get it as a matter of principle if nothing else.

The guys using his name are profiting from his brand without his permission… not nice.
