BuddyPress Now Available On Standalone WordPress

Up until yesterday, BuddyPress was a plugin for WordPress MU (Multiuser) that allowed you to easily and quickly turn your WordPress MU installation into a social network of the facebook/myspace/hi5 type, enabling easy use of social network staple features like Friend Lists, Groups, Chat, Private Messaging, Activity Streams etc.

With the release of BuddyPress 1.2 Beta, BuddyPress is now available on standalone installations of WordPress too (as of yesterday works with WordPress 2.9.1 version).

This is especially great news for folks (like myself) who customize WordPress to develop non-blog websites, as BuddyPress is part of the Automattic network and as such allows its themes to be modified in a manner similar to standard WordPress themes.

If you haven’t given BuddyPress a whirl, now is as good a time as any.
