A .ME domain name is being used for the official website of a new Universal Pictures 3D-CGI Movie – Despicable Me.

Fans of the movie starring Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Miranda Cosgrove and Julie Andrews can view videos and play games on the movie’s official website – Despicable.Me.

“Dot-ME is the ideal partner to help promote Despicable Me,” said Doug Neil, Senior Vice President of Digital Marketing, Universal Pictures. “The film’s name lends itself naturally to using this TLD for the official Web site. The online branding and promotion are stronger because the domain extension ties in perfectly with our title.”

Since its launch in April 2008, the .ME registry has seen more than 350,000 .ME domain registrations worldwide.

“Dot-ME has become a destination domain for businesses and entrepreneurs who want to take advantage of the extension’s ability to make bold branding statements, as well as create personal call-to-action or catch phrase titles,” noted Predrag Lesic, Chief Executive Officer of the .Me Registry.

“We are thrilled with the use of dot-ME to promote Universal Pictures’ new film Despicable Me,” added Lesic. “The dot-ME extension is now gracing theater trailers, Web promotions, film posters… raising awareness with an entirely new audience about the existence and value of dot-ME on the Web.”

Despicable Me opens in theaters July 9, 2010. For a sneak peek, visit www.Despicable.Me.

Good news for the .me extension, it will get in front of a lot of eyeballs, and that’s what helps an extension succeed. It might even give others the idea to use a .me extension for other projects. Part of the battle is getting the public to know the extension even exists. Wait until Facebook starts publicizing fb.me

I agree, it is definitely some great publicity for the .me registry.

This is very unusual. To choose .ME over .COM – almost unprecedented case. It would be interesting to see whether some other businesses will follow.

Definitely John,

It is much needed mainstream publicity as you can expect the domain name Despicable.Me to be publicized in cinemas, newspapers, on radio and via other mainstream media which should get a lot of mainstream publicity.
