Sony Registers PlaystationArc.com – Motion Controller Named?

Posted on January 26th, 2010 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »

Gaming enthusiasts already know that Microsoft came out with plans for a mind blowing innovation for the Xbox last year when they announced Project Natal – a “full-body motion-sensitive technology that should allow gamers to do what they want without holding on to any hardware.”

Project Natal (to be released this year) will offer much of the same functionality that the Nintendo Wii motion controller device (Wii-mote) already offers, but without having to hold on to the controller. Want to kick a ball in a game? Then make a kicking motion with your foot. Want to buzz in in a game show setting? Smack your fist into your hand. Want to share a drawing with an in-game avatar? Draw it and then hold it up to the Natal camera.

Obviously, as soon as Project Natal was announced, people expected Sony to come up with a hands free motion control system of their own and Sony did not disappoint – announcing their plans for a motion control system – a project to be completed in early 2010.

What Sony failed to announce was the name of their planned project – choosing to call the project Gem internally.

A few days ago vg247.com noticed that the domain name PlaystationArc.com has been registered by SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC as indicated in the domain names whois info, prompting debate over whether Arc is the name Sony has chosen for it’s new device:

Interestingly, the domain name ps3arc.com was registered a day following the news leak by Canadian firm UnderHost Networks Ltd.

It is also interesting to note that the domain name psarc.com was registered in 2009 and is currently available for sale at $350 via DomainMarket.com.
