Bad News For .Mobi – WorldCup.Mobi Sells For $3687 In World Cup Year

In what can be interpreted as bad news for .mobi lovers and owners, online domain marketplace Sedo has reported the sale of premium keyword domain name WorldCup.mobi for 2,272 GBP (roughly $3687 USD) in it’s recent sales feed.

In a year when the inaugural Football World Cup is to be held in Africa for the first time in the game’s history (South Africa 2010), you would think all online resources directly related to the event could fetch a sizable sum if they ever went up on auction.

While football’s governing body FIFA have made sure domains like WorldCup.com, WorldCup2010.com and FifaWorldCup.com redirect to FIFA.com, can we assume that WorldCup.mobi has been picked up by a FIFA affiliate? The transfer is still pending according to the domain’s whois so the jury is still out on whether FIFA considers .mobi a valuable extension.

Certainly though, the low price fetched on the Sedo auction for WorldCup.mobi should be considered an indication of the dropping value of the .mobi tld? Should it not?

Or maybe it’s just that smart domainers weren’t willing to bid up a domain name that could quite easily be taken away from them on terms of trademark infringement, given how many TMs FIFA has with “World Cup” in them…

  2. Snoopy says:

Sounds like a good price to me. Probably has TM issues aswell.
