Godaddy LinkBaits And Everyone Bites

Posted on February 2nd, 2010 by admin in Domain News | 2 Comments »

Godaddy has made it almost a tradition to run ads during the Super Bowl game – they have done it every year for the past 6 years. They have also made it a tradition to throw in a bit of linkbaiting during the same time of year – and everyone has made it a tradition to bite on that.

What’s linkbait?

The term “linkbait” is used to describe website content whose main purpose is to generate incoming links or references on other sites. Linkbait content can take different forms – from a unique tool or a breaking news story to a well written article or controversial image or video.

So, what have Godaddy done this time?

They created a controversial video as a proposed commercial video for one of their two ad slots they purchased for the Super Bowl – the video features race car driver Danica Patrick and a feminine, ex-football player named “Lola.”

See for yourself:

The video was rejected, and obviously, Godaddy’s plan has worked as everyone has picked up on the rejection …

It appears Mr Parson’s plan worked to perfection… again.

  1. We did bite but we honestly don’t care too much about GoDaddy not getting the air time. our angle was more along the lines of the fact that it was a gay football player that may have gotten it rejected.

    Thanks for the reply Mike.

The thing is, Godaddy most likely knew that their ad will get rejected… just like some of their “controversial” ads in the past.

This is why they make a controversial ad that gets rejected, and they follow it up with a normal ad that gets aired.

They enjoy the controversy, as it gets them lots of links and discussions about Godaddy all over the place.
