New .CN Regulations Result In Registration Drop
Posted on February 2nd, 2010 by admin in Domain News | No Comments »
The recently introduced stricter regulations for registering .CN domain names (by CNNIC – .CN registry) are causing some Chinese people to look elsewhere when registering domain names (as reported by the Financial Times), an occurrence which consequently is having a detrimental effect on the growth of the .CN ccTld.
“We are seeing people starting to bypass domestic domain names,” said Song Yingqiao, vice-president at HiChina, a leading web registrar. “Twenty to 30 per cent of new customers are now going for .com instead of .cn domain names.”
The latest regulations require .CN domain names to be registered with the Chinese government. Failure to comply with this requirements results in the website being taken down. Introduction of these regulations was most likely triggered by bad press the extension received in recent times when it was labeled as “commonly used in phishing attacks”.
Perhaps as a result of the stricter regulations, .CN ccTld is no longer the largest ccTld as it has been overtaken by .DE – the German ccTld.
Verisign’s December 2009 industry report shows a huge decline in registrations for the .CN extension, with the growth rate dropping from 76% (reported in December 2008) to 3%. The German ccTld .DE on the other hand remained steady at 7% growth.
