Wimp.no – Some People Just Don’t Get It

According to TechCrunch, Norwegian tech companies Aspiro and Platekompaniet are launching a music streaming service for Norwegian users.
The service “is launching with streaming deals with over 20 content providers for over 6.5 million songs, including the four major record companies and a number of smaller independent partners. These include Universal Music, Sony Music, EMI, Warner Music, Phonofile, Arts Pages, IODA, The Orchard, Beggars Group, Naxos, Vidzone and a few more.”
That’s all great, right, except for one thing. The service is called WIMP!
Not only is it a really crappy name – what are you doing? “I am WIMPing out with some cool music” – but they don’t own the .com domain name.
The domain name for this new service is WIMP.no – obviously I guess, for Norwegian users – however, not owning the .com on top of having such a crappy name for a service is a double fail.

I probably would agree if they had plans for the international market but they “are launching a music streaming service for Norwegian users”…
So what exactly do they not get? They’re using a short and brandable name (which probably has some meaning in Norwegian) in their ccTLD. C’mon guys, there is a non-English speaking web! You really can do better than this article.

They will lose a lot of traffic to Wimp.com as folks will forget to type in the .no a lot of the times. On top of that, I am sure lots of Norwegian people speak English (I believe it is compulsory in schools there) so everyone there will know what a WHIMP is.
I think the WIMP.no folks named their service after WIMP -> “window, icon, menu, pointing device” … however the similarity with WHIMP is unavoidable.
