How To Make A WordPress Page or Post Link To Any URL

Posted on April 20th, 2010 by admin in Domain Development, Domain News | No Comments »

I wanted to make a couple of my posts here on DNXpert.com link to urls outside my blog – as in, when you click on the post link in my post listing or in my RSS feed you get redirected to the url of my choosing rather then being directed to my post content.

Obviously, WordPress doesn’t do this out of the box but there is a neat little plugin called Page Links To authored by Mark Jaquith that does the job beautifully.

The plugin basically allows you to make a WordPress page or post link to a URL of your choosing, instead of its WordPress page or post URL.

Installation is a breeze especially with the latest version of WordPress allowing you to download and install the plugin from within your WordPress admin section.

Simply go to your Add New plugin screen, search for “Page Links To” and install the plugin from there.

Once you install the plugin, when writing new posts or pages, you will get a new box under your Discussion, Custom Fields etc boxes called Page Links To. Simply enter the url you wish your post/page to link to, publish the post and that’s it. Whenever someone clicks on your page or post in your feed, menu or elsewhere, they will be directed to the external url you specified.

Additionally, by default the plugin makes the redirects permanent 301 redirects, but you can also choose to make them temporary 302s. The 301 feature is neat in case you moved certain posts elsewhere and you don’t want to incur SEO penalties for duplicate content.
