Arab Nations Lead The Way With First IDN Tlds

Arab nations are leading the way in the launch of the first fully internationalized country code top level domain names.

The new IDN ccTlds i.e. country domain names fully written in the native language of a country have finally been launched as announced by ICANN.

As long ago as November 2007 we reported ICANN was planning to fastrack the IDN ccTld process – with the fasttracking officially approved in October 2009 – and we can finally report that such fast-tracked IDN ccTlds are live.

The first 3 countries to launch their own fully internationalized top level domain names are all Arab nations: Egypt مصر (Misr), Saudi Arabia السعودية (AlSaudiah) and the United Arab Emirates امارات (Emarat).

According to ICANN, so far it has received a total of 21 requests for IDN ccTLD(s) representing 11 languages. A total of 13 requests have successfully passed through the “String Evaluation” (the second stage of the process) and are hence ready for the requesting country or territory to initiate the request for TLD Delegation (the final stage of the application process). As of today, the first three of these have been delegated into the DNS root zone, which means they are available for use.

Arabic (written and read right to left) is now officially the first non-Latin script to be used as an IDN ccTLD.
