How To Test A New WordPress Theme Without Affecting Live Site

Posted on May 26th, 2010 by admin in Domain Development, Domain News | 3 Comments »

Since I am always looking to improve my wordpress-running sites, I am always on the lookout for plugins that can make this task easier.

Even though I could do this on my localhost or on my test server, I thought it would be neat if there was a way for me to test what a new theme looks like on a live WordPress site without affecting the site’s flow or visitors.

Firstly I thought – awesome idea – I might actually write a useful feature for once that can become a popular WordPress plugin.

Like I do always before I start writing any new WordPress code, I went to Google and searched for “test wordpress theme” and the first link that came up was what I was looking for – so no new code writing for me :( .

The “Theme test drive” plugin by Vladimir Prelovac lets you “safely test drive any theme on your blog as administrator, while visitors still use the default one.”

It works like a charm, I am currently testing my new theme for a site while my visitors are none the wiser!

Nice one mate. Thanks for the useful link.
You could write some new code anyway…perhaps you could make some improvements ;)

  2. I was a little unsure when I saw the plugin page say:

    2 people say it works.
    3 people say it’s broken.

but I’m going to give it a shot now.

I dont think WordPress Testdrive is working anymore.. not with WP 3.1

Would you consider tweaking it to make it work?
Or would that be too much to ask?

Please respond, I (and many with me) would love to have it working again.
